In Bollywood, we have some actors and actresses that showed flashes of brilliance and promise of a long flourishing careers ahead, but for a variety of reasons, then faded out to the disappointment of their fans. Here is a list of 12 such celebrities.
Bhagyashree made one of the most sensational debuts in Bollywood History. Meine Pyaar Kiya, costarring Salman Khan, remains an iconic movie that changed the way romantic movies were made in Bollywood. Bhagyashree was widely praised for her acting as a debutant, her looks and her charm. Unfortunately for her, despite her immense popularity and a mountain of big offers at her feet, her career did meet the expectations. In the beginning, she asked her husband to be cast opposite her in her movies, which did not work well for her. Most of her offers were withdrawn and the ones she did with her husband failed at the box office. By the time she came around, the high was gone and she was left with a series of flops. Her career never took off after that.
Ashiqui was another path breaking movie that took the industry by a storm. From the music to the movie, everything was a blockbuster. Rahul Roy was the most sought-after hero then. However his movies just did not work afterwards. Junoon was a much hyped movie which failed to recreate the magic on the box office. Soon he was taking character roles. He also had his moment of glory on television when he won Bigg Boss in 2006.
Anu Agatwal made her debut opposite Rahul Roy in Ashiqui. Before that she was a model and a VJ. Ashiqui made her overnight star and she was in serious demand. She had the looks that defied industry perceptions and the fact that the movie was a blockbuster showed that people accepted her overwhelmingly. However, her subsequent movies, which were few in numbers, just did not work. Then she had a near fatal accident that left her in a 29 day coma. When she came back from the coma, she posed nude in the short movie the cloud door. In 1995, it was a very daring move. Then she slowly disappeared from Bollywood.
Vivek Mushran made his debut alongside Manisha Koirala in Subhash Ghai’s one of the most successful films, Saudagar. Many critics credit Saudagar’s success to heavyweights like Dilip Kumar and Rak Kumar. But the fact remains that both Vivek and Manisha were overnight stars after the movie. However, for Vivek, his subsequent movies just did not work. He also acted worked in tv shows later on.
Bhumika Chawla came from the Telugu film industry and made her debut opposite none other than Salman Khan in Tere Naam in 2003. Tere Naam went on to be a blockbuster and Bhumika was an overnight sensation. She kept on doing a mix of Telugu and Hindi movies. But her Hindi movies did not do so well.
Sneha Ullal made her debut opposite Salman Khan in Lucky: No Time for Love in 2005. Even before the movie released, she was hyped for her striking resemblance with Aishwarya Rai. The movie was a block buster, but her subsequent movies did not work. She said that the constant conparisions with Aishwarya Rai did not help her career. She also took a brief break from Bollywood fearing that she was too young at that time. However, the come back was no much successful either. She did a mix of Telugu and Hindi movies.
Rajeev Khandelwal was a successful tv actor when he made his Bollywood debut in Aamir in 2008. The movie was huge hit and Rajeev’s work was appreciated by fans and critics alike. Unfortunately for him, his subsequent movies failed to recreate the magic. He went back to television in 2015.
Gayatri Joshi was a successful model and was one of the top five in miss India 1999. She then made her debut opposite the King Khan, Shahrukh Khan in Swadesh. Even though Swadesh was not the typical commercial movie, it was a blockbuster and the success made Gayatri Joshi one of the most sought-after actresses in Bollywood. She however, decided to voluntarily retire. She got married and never did a movie again.
Imaad Shah is the son of veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah and actress Ratna Pathak Shah. His Dil Dosti Etc became a huge hit in 2007 and suddenly he was an overnight celebrity. The movie’s video clips with his dialog became the new craze on the internet. Despite the popularity, his subsequent movies, which were few in number, did not do well at the box office.
Nargis Fakhri was a successful model when she attracted the attention of Imtiaz Ali in her appearance in the Kingfisher Calendar and she was signed for Rockstar opposite Ranbir Kapoor. The movie was a big hit, but while the movie was appreciated by critics, her performance as an actress got mixed reviews. None of her movies did so well at the box office afterwards.
Kumar Gaurav is the son of late actor Rajendra Kumar. He made in debut in 1981 opposite Vijeyta Pandit in “Love Story”. The movie was a huge success and Kumar was projected as the next big hero in Bollywood. But his subsequent movies failed to live up to the expectations.
Son of the great showman Raj Kapoor, Rajiv Kapoor’s carrer as an actor did not shine much apart from one blockbuster “Ram Teri Ganga Maili”. The movie was an exceptional hit and was widely appreciated by critics and fans alike. Rajik Kapoor’s movies previous to that and subsequent to that lacked the magic.
