A R Rahman On Oscar Longlist for “Pele: Birth Of A Legend”


A R Rahman‘s name has found it’s way into the Oscar longlist for his fabulous work in Pele: Birth Of A Legend. He has been mentioned as a probable nominee in two categories of the 89th Academy Awards. The first is for Best Original Score and the second for Best Original Song.

A R Rahman rose to international limelight for his brilliant work in Danny Boyle’s 2009 film Slumdog Millionaire that got equal praise from viewers and critics. The success of Slumdog Millionaire made A R Rahman famous, but it’s the two Oscars he won for his work that put him right in the top-most league in the world. He won Oscars for Best Original Score and the Best Original Song Jai Ho from from the film. Since then, he has been known and appreciated as one of the most accomplished composers in the world.


For the nominations this time, Rahman will complete with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, La La Land, Moana and Florence Foster Jenkins, among others. The longlist for original score has 145 entries.

Pele: Birth of a Legend is an American biopic on the legendary football player Pele. Written and directed by Jeff Zimbalist and Michael Zimbalist, the film released in May 2016.

Also on the Oscar longlist is the song Ginga that celebrates Pele’s soccer legacy. It’s one among 91 entries as probable nominations, according to the list released by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

In an interview to PTI earlier, A R Rahman was quoted saying When I was approached for the project, I first Googled who Pele was, because my life is all music. I saw amazing things about him and who he was.”

The final nominations for the 89th Academy awards will be announced on January 24th. The main ceremony will be held at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood on February 26.
