Gold takes us back to the days of independence and even pre-independence. The Indian hockey team was well renowned, but played under and for the British flag and represented the British queen. The movie is based on true events and a real person called Tapan Das – the man who led Independent India to her first gold. It’s awesome to get to hear the story – you get the highlights in the trailer. The story is rather unknown as Tapan Das does not even have a dedicated Wikipedia page yet.
Tapan Das essentially takes charge of getting together an Indian hockey team to play for a win under the Indian flag after independence. It will make you emotional and has immense patriotic appeal. The emergence of a young India from under the British rule and make a mark at an international level against immense odds can be deeply moving.
Akshay Kumar plays Tapan Das and looks emotional, angry and righteous throughout. He gets a typical stereotype Bengali look and accent. He speaks somewhat broken Hindi and sports a pencil mustache. Mouni Roy looks beautiful in her typical Bengali get up, and why not, she is a Bengali. But she does not get to do much in this trailer. Her appearance is limited to a couple of glimpses.
The trailer achieves most of it’s objectives. it gives a fair idea of the story, the set up and the experience. It raises curiosity and emotions to ensure that people will look forward for the movie.
On the downside, none of Akshay Kumar‘s team members look young enough to take to the field with hockey sticks and no particular attempt has been made to make them look young. The trailer focuses more on making them look emotional and patriotic.
Akshay Kumar has been a box office stalwart most of his career and Gold is expected to be another huge box office success. The trailer shows every sign of a hue box office success, especially as an independence day movie.
Now, if you have not seen the trailer yet. here it is.
