Bollywood Actresses With Most Filmfare Awards For Best Actress
A few days ago, we did an in depth story on the actors who have the most of these coveted Filmfare best actor awards. Here is a list of Bollywood’s best leading ladies that have won the most number of Filmfare best actress awards.
Vaijayanthi Mala, Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi and Vidya Balan – 3 awards each.
Vaijayanti Mala started her career and Tamil in 1949 and made her debut in Bollywood in 1951 in the movie Bahar and enchanted Bollywood and an entire country with her extraordinary dancing skills, looks and acting. Five years later, in 1956, she claimed her first Filmfare award as best supporting actress for her role as Chandramukhi in Devdas, costarring Dilip Kumar an Suchitra Sen. She won her first best actress Filmfare for Sadhnna in 1959, Ganga Jamuna in 1962 and Sangam in 1965.
Interesting trivia: in 1959, when she won the award for Sadhna, she was also nominated for her performance in Madhumati.
Jaya Bachchan, who was known for most of her career as Jaya Bhaduri, currently MP, Rajya Sabha, made her debut in a Bengali movie in 1963. She made her debut in Guddi in 1971. In the same year, she had another release called Uphaar. She was immediately nominated for the best actress award for her brilliant performance in both the films, but Lost to Asha Parekh (Kati Patang). However, she was given a Filmfare special award for Uphaar.
In 1974 she won her first Filmfare for best actress for Abhimaan with Amitabh Bachchan. In 1975, she again won it for Kora Kagaz and followed that up with another one in 1980 for Nauker. in 2007, she was given the lifetime achievement award.
Shabana Azmi, daughter of the famous Kaifi Azmi, made her debut in Aknkur in 1974 and, hold your breath, won her first national award for best actress on her debut. She was also nominated for Best Actress Filmfare, but lost to Jaya Bachchan (Kora Kagaz).
She won her first Filmfare award in 1978 for Swami. Then she went on to win the award for Arth in 1984 and Bhavna in 1985. She was nominated a total of eight times outside the wins.
Vidya Balan started off as a television actress in the famous comic show Hum Paanch, which ran very successfully from 1995 to 2006. In 2003, she made her debut in a Bengali film and in a Malyalam film simultaneously. In 2005 she made her debut in Bollywood with Pareenita directed by Pradeep Sarkar and co-starring Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Dutt. She immediately won the Filmfare award for best female debut and was nominated for Best Actress. Though she lost the award to Rani Mukherjee (black), it quite a sensational arrival.
She was again nominated for best actress in 2008 for Bhool Bhulaiyaa, but this time she lost to Kareena Kapoor (Jab We Met). She finally won the Filmfare best actress award in 2010 for Paa. The she followed it up with The Dirty Picture in 2012, for which she also won a National Award and for Kahani in 2012.
Meena Kumari and Madhuri Dixit – 4 awards each
Meena Kumari, also known as many as the tragedy queen, started her career as a child artist. She did a number of movies between 1939 and 1944 as a child actor known then as Baby Meena. Her first grown up character was in Bachchon Ka Khel in 1946. At that time she was 14 and she came to be known as Meena Kumari, the heroine. Her first Filmfare nomination came for the film Baiju Bawra in 1954 and she won the award. She again won it again the next year, 1955, for Parineeta. She followed that up with Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam in 1963 and Kaajal in 1966. Apart from that she had eight nominations in the category.
Madhuri Dixit is, no doubt, one the most popular actresses of all time. She was known equally for her looks, charm, dancing skills and acting skills. She made her debut in Abodh in 1985. She got her first nomination for Filmfare Best Actress for Tezaab in 1989. Though she lost the award to Rekha (Khoon Bhari Maang), Tezab was a huge hit and her popularity reached a peak. She was again nominated the next year, 1990 for Prem Pratigya, but this time lost to Sridevi (ChaalBaaz).
Again, the next year, in 1991, she got yet another nomination for Dil and this time she won it. Again, the next year, in 1992 she was nominated for Saajan and she again lost to Sridevi (Lamhe). But she came back to win it the very next year for Beta. Other times she won are for Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! in 1995 and Dil To Pagal Hai in 1998.
Nutan and Kajol – Five awards each.
Nutan made her debut in Bollywood in 1950. She won her first Filmfare award in 1956 for Seema. She followed it up with more wins for Sujata in 1959, Bandini in 1963, Milan in 1967 and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki in 1978.
She is overall the most-awarded actress in the female acting categories at Filmfare, with six awards alongside Jaya Bachchan.
Kajol is widely regarded as one of the most successful actresses in India. Daughter of actress Tanuja, Kajol made ber Bollywood debut in 1992 in Bekhudi. However, her next film in 1992 was the one that made her instantly popular – it was Baazigar opposite Shahrukh Khan. Her first nomination for Filmfare Best Actress came in 1994 for Yeh Dillagi, but she lost it to Madhuri Dixit (Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!). However, in 1995 came the path breaking blockbuster Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge costarring Shahrukh Khan and Kajol finally won her first Filmfare Best Actress. She followed it up with more wins for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1999, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in 2002, Fanaa in 2007 and My Name Is Khan in 2011.
