Oscars 2017 Jordan Horowitz announcing Moonlight as Best Film Winner

Oscars 2017: Why Did La La Land And Moonlight Mistake Take So Long To Correct? And The Full Correct List

The historic moment and epic mistake in Oscars 2017, when when Faye Dunaway read the name of the best film – La La Land! – there were two people, standing on either side of the stage in the Dolby Theater, who realized instantly the mistake that it is not La La Land but Monnlight is the actual winner. But for nearly two minutes no one else had any idea. The audience applauded, the team La La Land jumped, celebrated and embraced.  No matter how many awards they won, every award was special. Then producer Jordan Horowitz and Marc Platt delivered their thank-you speech.

After all this is done, finally, about one minute and fifty seconds after Dunaway declared the wrong winner, two people appeared onscreen – a man wearing a headset, and Martha Ruiz, one of the PricewaterhouseCoopers partners who oversees the Oscars ballot process. The man in the headset conferred with Horowitz and several others, as film producer Platt, apparently unaware of the drama behind him, wrapped up his comments. Amid the confusion, a third producer, Fred Berger, was reluctantly nudged to the mic, though he’d just been alerted to the mix-up and gave a few stilted remarks.

Only then did anyone take action — Horowitz, who grabbed the microphone and made the stunning announcement: “I’m sorry, no, there’s been a mistake. Moonlight,’ you guys won best picture. This is not a joke.”

Well, it turned out it wasn’t a joke. But for two people, who are charged with overseeing the announcement of winners, it was of course a nightmare. Dunaway and fellow presenter Warren Beatty had somehow been handed the wrong envelope, one containing the winner for best actress, which had been awarded moments earlier to Emma Stone for her role in La La Land.

It was precisely the sort of screw-up that Ruiz and Brian Cullinan, partners at the professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, have always worked to avoid. The two so-called Oscar ballot co-leaders oversee the vote-tallying process, identify the winners for each category, select the cards for the winners and seal them into their respective envelopes – but not before they memorize every winner in every category. At the ceremony, Ruiz and Cullinan carry matching briefcases, each filled with a full set of 24 envelopes with winning entries inside.

“Ideally, we like to have everything completed several days before the show. That last day is when Brian and I will start memorizing the winners of each category and start quizzing each other,” Ruiz said in a Feb. 10 interview published by the academy’s public relations arm. “It’s that extra measure to make sure it really is only to our memory at that point, to make sure that everything’s accurate.”

That final measure follows dozens of rounds of checking and re-checking the results, Cullinan added in that same interview: “We’ll have staff go back two and three times to make sure, and then Martha and I will review and recount to ensure there are no differences between what we have and they had.”

During the show, Ruiz and Cullinan stand on opposite sides of the stage and hand each envelope to the presenters.

“It doesn’t sound very complicated,” Cullinan said, “but you have to make sure you’re giving the presenter the right envelope.”

Which somehow didn’t happen Sunday night. In the aftermath of the mistake, PricewaterhouseCoopers issued an apology and said they would investigate what, exactly, went wrong.

But there is also the question of why, exactly, it took so long to correct an error that Ruiz and Cullinan should have recognized instantly. Certainly, it probably wouldn’t be ideal for someone to sprint wildly onstage the moment Dunaway made her announcement; but it seemed particularly unfortunate that the La La Land team suffered the humiliation of delivering speeches for a prize they didn’t win – and that the stunned cast and crew of Moonlight didn’t have much chance to acknowledge their rightful victory.

But despite the debacle, Moonlight director Barry Jenkins was magnanimous about the snafu in the press room.

“I noticed the commotion that was happening, and I thought something strange had occurred. And then I’m sure everybody saw my face. But I was speechless when the result – that was awkward, because I’ve watched the Academy Awards, and I’ve never seen that happen before,” he said. “And so it made a very special feeling even more special, but not in the way I expected.”

Jenkins added: “The last 20 minutes of my life have been insane. I don’t think my life could be changed any more dramatically than what happened in the last 20 or 30 minutes.”

No one offered a reason for the confusion, he said.

“No explanation. Things just happen, you know? But I will say I saw two cards,” he said. “I wanted to see the card to see the card. And Warren refused to show the card to anybody before he showed it to me. And so he did. He came upstairs, and he walked over to me, and he – he showed the card. Everybody was asking, Can I see the card? And he’s like, ‘No, Barry Jenkins has to see the card. I need him to know.’ And he showed it to me, and I felt better about what had happened.”

After the ceremony, Horowitz – who was widely lauded for his generosity and grace in a decidedly surreal, intensely awkward moment – described the emotional whiplash of the moment to The Hollywood Reporter.

At first, “I was ecstatic, it was amazing. I thought we won an Oscar,” he said. “Some guys in headsets started buzzing around. It became clear that was something wrong. They took the envelope I had. It said ‘Emma Stone, La La Land’ on it.”

There was suddenly a frantic search for the correct best picture envelope, he added. “Nobody knew where it was. Then it appeared, they opened it next to me and it said Moonlight.'”

Actor Bill Murray Turns Entrepreneur, Teams With Pebble Beach; Says ‘Don’t Go Crazy, It’s Not Like the JLo Line’

The ‘Ghostbusters’ Actor Bill Murray is now an entrepreneur with his new golf-centered clothing line. Being a permanent fixture at golf’s Pebble Beach Pro-Am for past 25 years, it is not a surprise that the actor chose the Pebble Beach Company as its first retailer. The comedian is enthusiastic about his new fashion line, but says there is nothing to write home about. “Let’s not get too serious about this,” Murray told “Squawk Box.” “It’s not like the JLo line.” He got the idea from his friends who helped the star track down a group making t-shirts with Murray’s face on them and that is how the “William Murray Golf” clothing line started. It has polo shirts, button-downs, shorts and hats. Speaking from the Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf tournament, Murray wore a pair of his line’s overalls, detailed with the Murray family tartan.

Five months ago, Murray had launched a golf apparel and lifestyle brand with the intent to bring more fun to the game of golf.

“You know, it’s kind of passive. I don’t have to do so much. Occasionally, I chip in with an idea or something like that,” he said.

Bollywood Red Scarlett Johansson Ghost in the Shell 2

Scarlett Johansson On Her Personal Struggle On Pay Disparity: I’m The Top Grossing Actor But Not The Highest-Paid

Hollywood’s top grossing actress Scarlett Johansson says that wage gap in the film industry is a reality. The Avengers star told Marie Claire magazine that just because she is the top-grossing actress of all time does not mean she is the highest paid. “I’ve had to fight for everything that I have. It’s such a fickle and political industry,” she said. Forbes named Scarlett Johansson the Top-Grossing Actor of 2016. According to Forbes, Scarlet brought $1.2 billion at global ticketing booths with the release of Captain America: Civil War and Hail, Caesar!. Her Avengers co-star Chris Evans stood second making ticket sales worth $1.15 billion.

Scarlet Johansson hasn’t been very vocal about the wage gap until now.

“Some people felt I should talk about my personal struggle in order to shed a spotlight on the greater issue. Maybe I’m being presumptuous, but I assumed it was obvious that women in all positions struggle for equality. It’s always an uphill battle and fight. My experience with my close female friends and family is that the struggle is real for everybody. Everyone has been discriminated against or harassed-sexism is real.” – Scarlett Johansson

Natalie Portman, Jennifer Lawrence and Patricia Arquette are among a few actors who have been vocal about pay disparity and related issues prevalent in in Hollywood.

Bollywood Red Scarlett Johansson Ghost in the Shell

Scarlett Johansson Defends Her New Movie ‘Ghost in the Shell’ Against Whitewashing Accusations

Scarlett Johansson has finally addressed the controversy surrounding her casting in her new movie “Ghost in the Shell“. In an interview with Marie Claire magazine, Johansson said that she never wanted to take the role away from an Asian actor and wouldn’t have accepted the role if that were the case. Johansson added that being a part of a franchise that stars a female protagonist is a rare opportunity and she felt compelled to take advantage of the opportunity. Amidst the excitement that the cherished Japanese manga and anime movie “Ghost in the Shell” is receiving the live-action, big Hollywood studio treatment, a lot still believe there is some major whitewashing going on with the project. Scarlett Johansson is playing the main character, Major Kusanagi, who in this version is notably just called “The Major.”

“Diversity is important in Hollywood, and I would never want to feel like I was playing a character that was offensive,” – Scarlett Johansson

Johansson tried to downplay the controversy and defend herself against accusations of whitewashing.

“Also, having a franchise with a female protagonist driving it is such a rare opportunity. Certainly, I feel the enormous pressure of that — the weight of such a big property on my shoulders.”- Scarlett Johansson

When Paramount first announced Johansson would be joining the project in April 2016, fans and actors of Asian descent protested the casting, calling it another instance of whitewashing in Hollywood including Ming-Na Wen and Constance Wu. Wen said while she didn’t have an issue with Johansson as an actress in general, she stood against everything the whitewashing of the role signified. Wu, who has been vocal about whitewashing and lack of Asian roles in mainstream Hollywood in the past, added her thoughts.

Johansson is the latest to come out and push aside the whitewashing controversy. Over the summer a producer on the film said that their adaptation of the anime is an “international story.”

Ghost in the Shell” does star Japanese actors, including the acclaimed Takeshi Kitano, but there are also a number of white actors. Michael Pitt, Michael Wincott and Juliette Binoche will also star in the film.

“Ghost in the Shell” opens in theaters on March 31.

Bollywood-Red-Time-Warner-2 Time Warner Earnings Beat Street Expectations

Time Warner Earnings Beat Street Expectations, Helped By Success Of ‘Harry Potter’ Spinoff “Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them”

Time Warner, which is in the process of being bought by AT&T, reported fourth quarterly earnings and revenue that beat Wall Street’s expectations, helped by the success of blockbusters like the “Harry Potter” spinoff “Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them”. The corporate parent of Warner Bros., HBO and the Turner networks on Wednesday posted an adjusted earnings per-share of $1.25per share on revenue of $7.89 billion. Analysts estimates forecast an earnings per-share of $1.19 and overall revenues of $7.72 billion, according to a consensus estimate from Thomson Reuters.  In the previous year, Time Warner earned 98 cents a share on revenue of $7.53 billion.

Time Warner, which is led by chairman and CEO Jeff Bewkes has agreed to be acquired by telecom giant AT&T which is a $85.4 billion deal.

“All our operating divisions increased revenue and profits while also making investments to capitalize on the growing demand for the very best video content and new ways to deliver it to audiences around the world.”  – Jeff Bewkes, Chairman and CEO, Time Warner

Bewkes said the deal to be acquired by AT&T “will accelerate our efforts to spur innovation in the media industry and further strengthen our businesses.” He said the company remains on track to close the transaction this year.

During his campaign, President Donald Trump opposed the merger. A transition official told Reuters earlier this month that Trump still was against the deal.

With global box office blockbusters such as “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice”, “Suicide Squad” and “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”, Time Warner had its best second-best year ever.

For the full year, Time Warner reported that revenues increased 7 percent to $11.4 billion in the Turner segment, helped by an increase in subscription revenues. “The increase in Subscription revenues was due to higher domestic rates and growth at Turner’s international networks”, the company said.

Free cash flow grew 22 percent to $4.4 billion, and cash provided from continuing operations grew 22 percent to $4.7 billion. EPS grew 23 percent to $5.86, versus $4.75 in 2015.
