In a landmark judgement, Nawazuddin Siddiqui‘s Haraamkhor has been unbanned by the FCAT (Film Certification Appellate Tribunal) and has finally been given the green signal to be released. That’s not all – the film has been granted a U/A certificate as well.
Haraamkhor, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Shweta Tripathi, is a film that revolves around the illicit relationship between a teacher and his young teenage student. Earlier this year the film was banned by the CBFC since they feared that its subject was very provocative. The makers of the film, Producers Guneet Monga, Anurag Kashyap, Feroze Alameer and director Shlok Sharma filed a case in the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal against the ban.
Following the case, special panel was made that watched the film and pass a judgement on the ban. When the judgement finally did come, the panel not only lifted the ban on the film, but they also awarded it a U/A certificate.
The film has been slated to be released on the 13th of January, 2017. Here is the trailer of the film:
Haraamkhor has been highly praised nationally and internationally by critics. The film was premiered in 15th annual New York Indian Film Festival and Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles. Nawazuddin Siddiqui received the Best Actor award for the film at the New York Indian Film Festival. It also won an award in the Mumbai film festival last year. It won in the NFDC pitch lab and won a grant from Vidhu Vinod Chopra at the Film Bazaar last year.
The makers of the film were elated as the tribunal recognized the social value of their film and cleared it for release. In their words, they felt that the film could be used for “furthering a social message and warning the girls to be aware of their rights”.
” We are extremely thankful to the tribunal for their support and their approach in understanding the film. It is indeed a landmark judgement and we are very happy that we can finally release the film and show it to our audience. After winning MAMI a lot of audiences have been asking for the film. This has surely been a long process but with the judgement we are extremely happy to announce the release date. Thank you once again!” – Guneet Amarpreet Kaur, Producer.
“Every film has its destiny and I’m very happy that Haraamkhor has finally fulfilled its. I’m so grateful to everyone who stood by me and the film through these testing times, especially Nawazbhai, Shweta and Guneet” – Shlok Sharma, writer and director.
The film is slated to be released on the 13th of January, 2017.
