Rachit Gupta on the Times of India

Rating: 4/5

Ranbir Kapoor is just as good as his reputation. To state that he’s an incredible actor who fills Sanjay Dutt’s role with gravitas and spunk is stating the obvious. That’s expected from a talented actor like Ranbir. But what he does best in Sanju, is that he delivers the central character’s swag and nonchalance in the most effortless manner.

Hirani, in his signature style, takes you through Sanju’s remarkable journey with the finesse and commitment it needs.

Review by Divya Pal on News 18 – An Out-And-Out Ranbir Kapoor Show

Hirani, brings the life of a star to the big screen and covers his rise, fall and rebirth, but doesn’t absolve him of his flaws or justify his life.

Casting is a masterstroke. All actors jell well with the characters they play. Paresh Rawal plays Sunil Dutt flawlessly. Manisha Koirala is pleasant in her cameo as Nargis Dutt.

Reviw by Namrata Joshi on The Hindu – when Sanjay Dutt’s fault lines are laid bare

For large parts Sanju feels staged than filmed, like watching a play recorded on camera than a film itself. Instead of taking you into its world, it seems to deliberately work on the opposite principle: of making you acutely conscious about witnessing the life and times of Sanjay Dutt as outsiders, with the screen becoming a substitute proscenium.

Drugs, booze and women — Hirani doesn’t hide the fault lines in Dutt’s life. He swings between a sense of waste and pity (not sympathy mind you) for his addictions to an awkward indulgence when it comes to his candidness about the number of women in his life.

Review by Rohit Vats on Hindustan Times – Ranbir Kapoor shines in an indulgent biopic by Rajkumar Hirani

Rating – 2/5

Director Rajkumar Hirani has rightly trusted an earnest actor like Ranbir Kapoor to play Sanjay Dutt in Sanju. Rating: 2.5

The director continues with the sympathetic tone towards his subject as he brings in a new biographer, Vinnie Diaz (Anushka Sharma). In Sanju, we witness an immoral womaniser who is ashamed of himself deep down.
