Standing On An Apple Box -Aishwaryaa’s account of growing up as daughter of Rajinikanth

A director, dancer and a singer, 34 year old Aishwaryaa Rajinikanth Dhanush, has just released her memoir “Standing On An Apple Box”. She is down to earth, grounded and has been able to carve her own niche around the shadow of two big personalities, her father Rajinikanth and her husband Dhanush and that is the point she wants to make – shattering the myth and misconceptions surrounding star children. This is her own account of growing up as the daughter of megastar Rajinikanth.

“We are called snobbish but we aren’t. We just like keeping to ourselves. Look at me, I am a film producer but many would look at me say ‘c’mon, you have your father and husband, why do you need us?’ We are constantly under scrutiny,” Aishwaryaa told in an interview to NDTV.

She gives credit to her mother Latha Rajinikanth for how she kept both her and her sister Soundarya away from the limelight which was constantly on her father. “My parents wanted us to have normalcy and now I realise how important that is because I am a mother of two myself and try to do the same,” says Aishwaryaa.

She gives one interesting account of her father how he was the one who accompanied her to a disco when she turned 18. “It was December 31 and my birthday falls on January 1 and I wanted to see a disco, and Appa said ‘fine, I will take you.’ It was New Year’s Eve. We went in and he says ‘now you have seen what it looks like, let’s leave.’ He had anticipated rightly, a crowd broke out seeing him in their midst but he also wanted to keep my heart and not deny me what I wanted”, she says. That is the sheltered upbringing she had during her growing up age.

Rajinikanth is extremely professional and takes his stardom seriously. “You will never see him joke about it or mock it or do something that will reflect badly. He takes it very seriously. He is someone who regards every film as his first. You never know what will work with the audience and what will not. The beauty of cinema is it’s unpredictability,” says the 34 year old director.
Regarding her marriage she says, “It was a beautiful transition and I was ready to handle what came with the territory”.
However, she says, there are no plans as of now to direct her father. “I am happy being the producer of my father’s films. We share a beautiful relationship, don’t want to be his director,” she says.
Why the title of the book is “Standing On An Apple Box”? Any relevance?
“Yes, a special one”. She says the boxes are often used to station cameras and equipment while filming and she usually sits on those boxes while watching the shoot.

Her megastar father and superstar husband have read the book, she says.”Yes, my father knew I had a flair and my husband was rather surprised”. she says.

The book was launched by Karan Johar and Sonakshi Sinha.
